Course Description

This course is designed to have students understand how the American consumer makes buying decisions, what is his or her role in the economy, what are his/her rights and responsibilities, and how their financial decisions impact their lives and the lives of others in our economy.

 

Course Content

Throughout the course of the semester the students will learn about many topics within our consumer economy.  Specifically, they will cover the following:

 

            Consumer decision making – consumer drives and motivations

            Consumer protection – rights and responsibilities

            Budgeting – tracking income and expenses

            Saving for financial security – institutions and account types, figuring interest

            Use of consumer credit – qualification, rights, responsibilities

            Budgeting Essentials – food, clothes, housing, and recreation

            Banking services – specifically use/maintenance of checking accounts

            Income taxes – affects on your paycheck, tax returns, and government spending

            Career preparation – exploration, self-assessment, application and interviewing

            Investing basics – stocks, other vehicles, retirement preparation

            Health and Life Insurance – planning for the necessity and unexpected

            Auto and Home Insurance – coverage basics and claims process

            Transportation – choosing a car, buying or leasing, maintenance and cost

            Effects of the American consumer on the global economy

Choosing services – health, legal, government assistance

           

Student Requirements

For successful completion of the course the students will need to do the following;

            Daily attendance with a STRONG effort and desire to understand the material

            Class participation

            Reading in and out of class

            Completion of daily assignments and projects

            Preparation prior to class  - bringing materials, text, supplies

            Keep organized notebook of chapters and notes/assignments etc…

 

Grading Procedures

            Your grade will be YOUR grade.  You OWN it based on your performance in class.  Your points earned will be comprised from your daily participation points, assignments, projects, quizzes and tests.  Every day will be graded  - so “bring your best” each and every day.

                        D+       77,76                D         75 - 73              D-        72 – 70        F  69% & below
